Smog Test & Repair

During your smog check, our technicians measure the amount of emissions your vehicle produces to ensure your vehicle is in compliance with California’s standards.

Counties subject to the smog certification program include: Yolo County, Solano County, Sutter County, Napa County, and Sacramento County among others.

Vehicles that require inspection include:

  • Most vehicles manufactured after 1997.
  • Diesel vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) less than 14,000 lbs.
  • Natural gas powered vehicles less than 14,000 lbs.

At Hank's Tire, we'll test your car’s emissions and help you determine whether repairs are necessary. We are legally certified to perform smog repairs in the event your vehicle fails the test.

Gold Shield Certified

We're a Gold Shield Certified shop, meaning our work meets the high standards set by the Bureau of Automotive Repairs. In addition to our smog inspection and repair services, we can legally certify vehicles classified as "Gross Polluters" as well as vehicles directed to Test-Only stations.

Facts About CA Smog Checks

  • Many counties in California require biannual smog checks.
  • With a few exceptions, you need to produce the current smog certification when transferring a vehicle.
  • If your vehicle is 6 years old or less, you can bypass the biannual smog check and pay an annual $20 abatement fee instead
  • Drivers need to register their vehicles within 90 days of receiving their “smog certificate,” the paper detailing the results of the emissions test.
  • Your renewal notice from the California DMV will tell you where you can go to have a smog check performed.

Smog checks were introduced in the 1970s as part of the Clean Air Act. Biannual smog checks help keep populated areas of California clean. Regular emissions testing reduces excessive smog, keeps pollutants out of the air, and contributes to a healthier state.
